NUKAS

Illustrator: Lina Itagaki
Format: hardcover
Pages: 40
Awards:
The Most Beautiful Book of the Year 2021 (IBBY)
My name is NUKAS. Not Jonukas and not Antanukas. A lot of people say I‘m an extraordinary boy. One day
I can‘t hear anything, and the next I can‘t see anything, but most importantly: when I HEAR I DON‘T see
anything, and when I SEE I DON‘T hear anything, and no one (even the doctors!) know why. Sometimes
children aren‘t able to hear what we‘re telling them and they don‘t seem to want to hear it. Sometimes they
don‘t see what they don‘t want to see. And there are children who can‘t see and those who can‘t hear. But
NUKAS doesn‘t resemble anyone that you know whilst the strangest things seem to happen to him.

A picture book for kids about the Holocaust. It’s a story centered around two kids living in the Vilnius Ghetto.
It follows two kids around the ghetto during the summer months: the reader observes them whilst they share a
bagel, fly a kite, listen to a concert and take care of a puppy. They do not understand why do the people that exit
through the gate never come and why they’re confined to the ghetto walls in the first place. One autumn day all
of the people from the ghetto leave… The story is universal – a similar one could have happened in the majority
of European cities during the Second World War. The illustrator did an absolutely spectacular job.

The book of poetry for the smallest of readers is original and fun. Each poem has an unexpected situation,
a narrative blow. In some poems, the poet plays with paradoxes, nonsensical situations. The lyrics capture
things that can be very important to a young child but overlooked by the adults.

It’s a book but also a joke. When the pipes burst, there’s no more water. Once there’s no more water, there’s
no more life. Whilst a father is mourning the life that’s been lost, his son is writing letters to the Plumbing
Service located on the I Don’t Know Anything street. The Plumbing Service keeps on sending postcards,
however no water in sight.
The burst pipe catastrophe, or our ability to make a mountain out of a molehill, describes the ‘nonsense’ aesthetic
in this book and becomes the grounding point for a visually bright irony. However, the most important theme is
centered around a child who is trying to make sense of the world.
